Preventing mid-air collisions
One of the key risk areas for General Aviation (GA) is mid-air collisions. In the EASA Member States (MSs), there are an average of 6 fatal collisions every year — tragically leading to the loss of 13 lives every year.
The goal is for every pilot and passenger to land safety after every flight to #flyanotherday. Whenever you take to the sky, it is important to “Be Seen and Be Aware”.
The EASA’s i-conspicuity campaign highlights a simple truth: the more visible you are to others, the safer everyone is in busy airspace. The video shown in this article (see below) illustrates a flight scenario in uncontrolled airspace. Thanks to the helicopter being equipped with an ADS-B and the airplane with an ADS-L device, a collision in the air can be avoided. It shows that visual scanning alone is not enough and highlights the importance of interoperable iConspicuity solutions for transmitting and receiving position data. The scenario illustrates how the correct selection and use of such devices improves situational awareness and safety.

Brief summary:
Become part of the iConspicuity community by equipping your aircraft with an interoperable electronic device to transmit your position. There are three interoperable ways to stay informed about surrounding traffic during flight:
- Certified ADS-B device
- Non-certified ADS-L device with direct transmission
- ADS–L-based mobile applications (e.g., SkySafe)
There are other proprietary solutions, but they may not be fully compatible with each other.
ADS-L applications and systems collect data from various sources (OGN, etc.) and offer the highest possible interoperability today and in the future. Familiarize yourself with the performance and limitations of your individual system and share your experiences with the community.
