Flying in the mountains: Incorporate the right flight tactics and sufficient reserves

A young pilot with little flying experience was flying in a triple formation from Pays-d’Enhaut to Valais. She underestimated the height of the terrain and was killed in the accident. The tragic chain of wrong decisions and poor flight tactics ultimately led to the tragic accident in the summer of 2019, the accident report of which was recently published by the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB). Conclusion: Whether in summer or winter, the right flight tactics are crucial in the mountains. This means never flying into a valley without already being at least 1000ft (in windy conditions rather 2000) above the pass behind you at the entrance to the valley.
