Advantages and risks of collision warning systems
Meanwhile, due to the advance of digitalization, numerous collision warning systems are available on the market for pilots, whether as a stand-alone device or as an app on a cell phone. These tools are already very popular and are actively used in the cockpit. These devices virtually “expand” the PIC’s range of vision because the technology makes traffic visible on a tablet or cell phone. But is traffic still relevant at a distance of more than 3nm?
It has been shown that the PIC’s focus changes significantly when using these devices. When there is a traffic alert on the display, the holistic visual scan gives way to a focus on the screen and on a specific area. This creates a risk, because currently less than half of the traffic is even displayed. The correct use of these devices is therefore crucial to ensure that safety is actually improved. The video with Steve Jarvis on behalf of the CAA and GASCo shows us this. He impressively demonstrates not only the advantages, but also the possible side effects that we absolutely must be aware of.
Our recommendation: If you have a headset with Bluetooth, pair it with your collision warning system. This way, you will be informed acoustically in case of traffic. Your view and attention should not be directed at the display, but mainly outwards, and indeed to the entire airspace in the immediate vicinity. As always, the rule is: see and avoid!
