Aircraft accident in bad weather: Poor flight preparation, overconfidence, and fatal mistakes

© BFU

A recently published article in Fliegermagazin describes the crash of a Cessna 177B in bad weather near Burg Feuerstein. During the return flight, the experienced pilot flew into a snow shower with extremely poor visibility, ignored alternative routes, and lost control of the aircraft after several failed approach attempts. The German Accident Investigation Board (BFU) identifies the main causes as inadequate weather preparation, adherence to the original plan (“continuation bias”), and overestimation of one’s own abilities. The accident highlights the importance of thorough weather checks and having an alternative plan during flight operations.

This accident demonstrates that even on short flights in familiar surroundings, careful weather preparation and a Plan B are essential. We provided you with an important decision-making aid for flight in our last post. Making the Right Decisions – on the Ground and in the Air

DECIDE: Detect (Look for and recognize changes) – Estimate (need for response) – Choose (options) – Identify (specific actions) – Do (implement) – Evaluate (check results).
