Airspace Delta

In the past, dangerous approaches have repeatedly occurred between IFR and VFR traffic in the vicinity of aerodromes, mainly due to incorrect expectations regarding ATC in Delta airspace. The STSB final report 2167 https://www.sust.admin.ch/inhalte/AV-… illustrates this with a specific example. As part of these investigations, the STSB conducted an anonymous survey of 241 civil pilots and flight instructors (m/f).

The survey showed that the majority of private and commercial pilots and flight instructors did not understand the essential elements and rules of Airspace Delta. Pilots are lulled into a false sense of security and often believe that they will always receive separation in Delta airspace. Because this perception can be classified as a significant safety deficit, the STSB has issued various safety recommendations in this regard.

With the help of three sample videos, we want to show pilots which points need to be observed when flying through delta airspace. Delta airspace (CTR or TMA) is used by both VFR and IFR traffic. The following therefore applies:

  • Report to the air traffic controller in good time
  • Do not use the initial call (first call)
  • Be brief and speak clearly
  • If you do not receive a response from the controller, keep your distance from the CTR
  • No response from the controller means no clearance for crossing
